Harris is an internationally recognized sculptor whose bronzes have been commissioned by European royalty. His sculptures are included in the private collections of U.S. presidents and Hollywood celebrities. He describes himself as a cowboy-turned-professor-turned-artist.
Growing up in northern Utah, Harris put himself through college training a string of colts each summer. During the Korean War, he served as a horse trooper with a reconnaissance squadron in the Bavarian Alps. He earned a B.S. in animal science at Utah State Agriculture College, then worked as a cow boss on a ranch in eastern Arizona. In 1954, Roy completed his M.S. at Utah State University and joined the animal science faculty At Cal Poly.
He completed his doctorate in animal genetics and physiology in 1970 at Utah State University. During his tenure at Cal Poly, his work as a research scientist and geneticist earned both national and international recognition in science and technology fields. Currently, he is collaborating on a book detailing his theory that a race horse's conformation is the best predictor of the horse's success on the track.
Harris' lifelong interest in "range critters" and western life grew into a remarkable skill and passion for beautiful, hauntingly real sculptures. His experience with animals gave him an eye for human and animal proportion and conformation.
His commissioned bronze works include two life-size skiers in Idaho's Sun Valley Resort and a series of pieces requested by Spanish royalty depicting a champion Arabian mare, Abha Hamir. Boise State University commissioned Harris to create a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the BSU bronco mascot for display outside the BSU football stadium. His work has been displayed at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma.
